Nippon Paint Malaysia Group, in partnership with renowned 10-year veteran Malaysian graffiti artist Katun, brought together 10 graffiti enthusiasts to be part of a half-day learning workshop.
The workshop was established as a platform for the group to learn about the various ways to create impactful and personal designs with the usage of Nippon Paint’s Pylox, a spray paint range that seeks to promote interest, inspiration and appreciation for art among the younger generation.
Katun’s name stems from his love of reinterpreting cartoon characters into artistic impressions which are emblazoned on walls and books with edgy techniques, a childhood passion which has become a symbolic part of who he is today.
Throughout his creative journey, Katun has expanded his artwork beyond Kuala Lumpur and into the international arena in countries such as United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Tahiti, Australia, Indonesia and Singapore.
“I am definitely impressed with the techniques and skills shown by the participants.
“It is evident that their love for graffiti art has created a genuine passion, pushing them to seek for learning opportunities online and at workshops.
“All that is required for them to advance to the next level is enough practice to refine their skills and in the process, discover their personality and embed it in their style.
“I honestly believe that learning platforms, such as this workshop, are a good starting point for graffiti artists to learn and improve,” said Katun.
At the workshop, the participants were coached by Katun himself, who demonstrated techniques and skills required to create an impressionable graffiti masterpiece such as creating prominent signatures, eye-catching bubble letters and background enhancers.
“The graffiti landscape in Malaysia has grown from being an avenue for art lovers to express their creative emotions into an artistic beauty widely accepted by the community through its elaborative art form on walls.
“We at Nippon Paint are supporters of the artistic community and expressing creative imagination and achieving dreams.
“Through this partnership with Katun, we hope to showcase the talent and dreams of local artists and promote the culture of graffiti art in Malaysia because truly, if you can dream it, you can Pylox it,” said Nippon Paint Malaysia Group general manager Gladys Goh.
The 10 graffiti enthusiasts were the selected lucky winners of Nippon Paint’s Instagram contest.
Nippon Paint is partnering with like-minded individuals to organise these workshop initiatives to build up a creative community to inspire and promote the appreciation of art among Malaysians, especially the younger generation.
